Lab Coordinator, Makayla Pollock, is awarded!

Our lab coordinator, Makayla Pollock, was recently awarded the Gail Raskin Outstanding Research Staff Award by MU’s Department of Psychological Sciences!

Undergraduate Research Assistant, LeAndra Rhymes, is awarded!

Senior lab member, LeAndra Rhymes, was recently awarded the Diverse and Inclusive Research Award for her independent research project she presented at the Undergraduate Research Week!

New graduate student to start in the lab in Fall 2024!

Jennifer Hudson will be joining us in the Fall to start her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard. Her research interests center on examining the interplay between ethnic/racial factors (e.g., ethnic/racial identity, racial socialization), racial stressors (e.g., discrimination and microaggressions), and health. Specifically, she is interested in examining dimensions of Black racial identity and how one's identity interacts with the effects of racial stressors. Overall, she aims to conduct culturally responsive research that reduces ethnic and racial health disparities. We are so excited for her to join our team!!

Nylah McLarren presents at the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference

Honors student and McNair Scholar, Nylah McLarren, presented her independent research project at the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference!

Nylah’s project examined how institutional composition affects Black women’s experience of impostor phenomenon.

Da’Leana Sullivan: Empowerment through Advocacy Workshop

Our lab member Da’Leana Sullivan hosted a workshop titled “Empowerment through Advocacy” at the Filling in The Space (F.I.T.S) - Spreading the Wealth Event on April 13th! This workshop was intended to help students become effective advocates by empowering their voices for their personal interest. During this workshop, individuals gained knowledge on skills and tools that are essential for shaping great advocates! This workshop aimed to teach students about advocacy so they can go on to make meaningful impacts within their community and beyond. Through her open discussion, participants were encouraged to build confidence, communication skills, and embody the advocacy spirit!

Our lab coordinator, Makayla Pollock, presented her research project titled “Racial Discrimination and Anxiety Symptoms Among Black Youth: The Moderating Roles of Parental Worry and Youth Age” at the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology Diversifying Clinical Psychology Conference on April 13th!

India Matthews: NSF Honorable Mention and Paper Published!

Our graduate student, India Matthews, received an honorable mention from the National Science Foundation regarding her application to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program!

Dr. Bernard and her also had their paper accepted to the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. Their paper is titled “Psychosocial pathways linking racial campus climate to impostor phenomenon among Black college students”.
